Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character, and character, hope.
Romans 5:3-4
Dear Friends:
How do you want your life’s story to go? If you are like most, it follows the plot line of going from good to better to best! We want nothing of suffering. If there is any place in our story where we might allow it, it’s at the very end and only for a brief moment before we go to heaven. However, scripture teaches us something that surprises us…
Per Paul’s letter to the church at Rome, suffering is where a faith story begins. Look at all the wonderful things that follow in suit – perseverance, character, and hope. All of these are quintessential to the Christian journey. This makes me think about New Testament stories. Jesus’s ministry was preceded by forty days in the wilderness. Mary Magdalene’s ministry to Jesus was preceded by being possessed by seven demons. Paul’s ministry was preceded by three days of total blindness in Damascus. John’s revelation of heaven was preceded by exile on the island of Patmos. All of these stories began with suffering that led to perseverance, character, and hope. Do we pretend our lives to be any different?
On March 4 – 11th, I along with a skilled mission team, will be in Ukraine to offer support to Ukrainian Christians who continue to serve their communities faithfully despite the suffering from a four year’s war with Russia. We will be as far away from the area in conflict as possible caring for the heroes of our faith. We will behold that through great suffering they exhibit perseverance, character, and hope. I can only hope to learn and be amazed in their presence. I want to invite you all to be a part of this mission trip so that you too can aid them in their suffering as you seek insight into your own. You can read a daily update along with pictures that I will post. If I don’t post each day, don’t fear! It might just be that I’m without an internet connection. I invite you to use my daily posts as a means to pray for those in great need, pray for a just peace in Ukraine, and pray that through it all, we will all learn to meet God in the suffering. Please respond to my post so that I can know your prayers and feel your love in the space available. I thank you for your support as I answer this call that has surely been placed upon my life. I will be forever changed.
Sincerely,
Pastor David Hughes

Hello all! I successfully arrived to Prague today at 12 pm local time. The trip here was very smooth with no delays. I am so thankful for traveling mercies thus far!
I was able to check into room and catch up on some sleep that did not happen on the plane. The rest of the team arrived intermittently throughout the afternoon.
We all met in the lobby and went out for dinner together at a delicious pizza spot. While I have met everyone on Zoom calls it was nice to meet them in person. Each person is a wonderful reflection of Jesus. Our eight person team is compromised of three Brits and four Americans. Tonight we were also joined by several Ukrainian friends and an American partner who all live here in Prague.
We have concluded for today but will meet for a team breakfast at 9 am tomorrow followed by some free time in the city and then our long voyage by train to Poland where we will some the night.
Thank you so much for your continued prayers. We are all grateful for your support.
Sincerely,
Pastor David

Today was an incredibly busy day beginning with an early morning breakfast with the team followed by a brief moment to site see in the City of Prague by foot.
We gathered at the train station for a 2:30 pm train to Kosice. This is in Slovakia, not Poland as I previously said. The train ride was 9 hours in total which gave us lots of time to talk with one another, read, and relax. At one point, somehow all of us fit into one small train room to have evening prayer together.
We arrived in Kosice at 11:30 pm where we were met by Aleksey and his two sons Mike and Nick. (For my FBCC people, you will remember that Aleksey was with us in September). They helped us into our hotel and we will all get some much needed sleep before tomorrow’s journey into Ukraine.
Please pray for our continued safety as well as all of our Ukrainian ministry partners who are heading to our retreat site tomorrow. I cannot wait to meet them all and begin to minister to them.
The Lord bless you and keep you. I thank God each time I think of you.
Sincerely,
Pastor David

Hello friends:
Today was the day we all were waiting for. We finally crossed over into Ukraine and united with the ministers and chaplains we have come to serve. Praise be to God the border crossing had no complications and we arrived safely at our retreat site in the Carpathian Mountains around 4 pm local time.
Over 30 minsters, chaplains, and their spouses are with us now. In our short time together I have already heard incredible stories of their ministries in the face of great danger and difficultly. One gentleman traveled three days to arrive here. However, now here, I watch as they relax, smile, and reconnect Tonight’s service was very moving as we honored every person present who had lost a loved one with a slideshow and time of prayer. Many people wept and all cried. It was heartbreaking, and yet this is the reason we have come – to comfort the broken hearted and be united with them in their time of suffering. I ask for your prayers for them as well as your continued prayers for our team. Each person is uniquely called and doing a fantastic job.
I’ll write again tomorrow.
Sincerely,
Pastor David

Hello dear friends:
Today was the first full day the retreat. After breakfast I was honored to lead a 30 minute prayer time for all. In my prayer time, I focused our group on simply being in the presence of God. Since their lives are so busy and demanding, this retreat offers them one of the few times in their year to relax and focus on such things.
The morning and afternoon sessions featured the Ukrainian pastors and ministry leaders talking about their projects and churches. Many of them focus on feeding hungry war refugees, serving displaced children, caring for widows of fallen soldiers, serving soldiers, and church planting. What’s incredible about these stories is that so many of them happen within miles of the war front. Some are occurring even with the constant threat of drone attack from the Russian army.
This lead me to the following question, “If I was the pastor of a church that was only miles from an I’m invading enemy force, would I be so brave as to remain and continue to be the Church in my community?” I want to believe that the answer would be yes, as I believe all of us do. However, I want to be completely honest – this takes incredible courage that I don’t believe we rarely have to call on in the U.S. May stories like these we are hearing from our Ukrainian brothers and sisters inspire us to be so brave.
The last day of the retreat is tomorrow and I feel like we just got started. I hope to write again tomorrow.
Love,
Pastor David

Dear friends:
A little bit longer post today since I won’t post on Saturday or Sunday.
It’s been wonderful watching these pastors and chaplains get to play a bit today. Some of us went to hike. Others relaxed at the retreat site. The majority went to the local hot spring and enjoyed a dip. All of us came back laughing and ready to enjoy a mid afternoon meal. It’s been an early spring by Ukrainian standards, and the sunshine has been pleasant in the afternoon.
Sadly, one of our friends, Pastor Sasha had to leave early due to a family emergency and could not participate in the activities. His mother fell and broke her hip. He is also returning to one of the areas in extreme conflict in Vasylkivka. His village is in rubble, suffering from daily drone attacks, shelling, etc. We all gathered and prayed for him. He cried and us along with him. He is a dear person who is accredited for the reason Dnipro Hope Mission exists. It’s incredible to think that in addition to a war, these individuals are also managing family dynamics like aging parents, raising children, and making a living.
Tonight we are soon to bestow gifts to our brothers and sisters. I have two gifts for each participant and their spouse which were thoughtfully prepared by Mariah Whitmer and sponsored by FBCC. We will also have a time of worship, partake in the Lord’s Supper, and have prayer. Tomorrow everyone leaves. The pastors to their homes and our team to a two part stop. I, along with Rodger, Margaret, Aleksey, and his two sons will go to his current city to lead worship on Sunday. The other half of the team will go to visit and support local seminaries. We will reunite with them on Sunday evening.
It will be a sad goodbye tomorrow. The hugs and WhatsApp messages have already started so that we can keep in touch.
Please pray for a safe travel day for all tomorrow. It will be a very busy day. Please also pray for all of us as we prepare to serve in our next stations. Very important ministry still remains. God is faithful and will see us through.
I’ll write again on Monday.
Grace and peace,
Pastor David

Dear friends:
Of all the joys of mission is this: being around the table with new friends and celebrating Christian fellowship. In that sense, I was doubly blessed. First, at church and later at a meal I’ll talk about in greater detail later. I was able to preach during the worship service at Pastor Aleksey Yuditsenko’s church “Heart of Christ.” This church is not yet four years old and was planted by Aleksey and his family when they were forced to move due to Russian occupation. It consists of 70-100 attendees on any given Sunday in a cozy room. The members of the church are largely war refugees who, like Aleksey, were forced to leave their homes with nothing. However, what they might lack in physical possessions, they have immeasurably more in the riches of The Holy Spirit. Their welcome was sincere. Their hospitality was warm. Their devotion to God was clear. We worshipped God together.
After worship, Aleksey took me to see his storage unit where he keeps all of the food stuffs, materials, and clothing items which he takes to the war front. It is impressive to see the network he has created between aid agencies and people who live in conflict areas. He is one of the most faithful servants I have ever met. Where there is a need, Aleksey will find away. Now for the real treat – we were invited to Aleksey’s home and treated to Sunday dinner with his two sons and wife. Between broken English and a healthy dose of Google translator, we enjoyed a sacred time at the table sharing memories and laughter. A traditional Ukrainian soup called “Bortsch” was prepared which was delicious! I didn’t want it to end, but with a four hour car ride ahead of us, we dutifully packed our bags, said our goodbyes, and headed off with Aleksey to the final stop of our journey. We arrived late Sunday night and went to sleep for a few short hours. I am tired, but my heart is incredibly full.
Praying for you,
Pastor David

Dear friends:
God used today to tie so many things together. For all that I have felt in my heart this last week, God used today to reveal all of the reasons as to why.
We were blessed to participate in a theological conference in a storied Ukrainian seminary. Theologians from all over Europe were present and spoke on the presence of evil in our world and how it manifests itself specifically in Russia’s war against Ukraine. Our own team leader, Dr. Joshua Searle, was one of the keynote speakers who drew deeply from theologians like Karl Barth who define evil as the state of “absence of being.” If we are to counteract this evil and the suffering it causes, we must name it and then live in opposition to it by never letting any person or people be dehumanized by others. Joshua did a superb job, as did the other speakers.
Following the lectures, I was honored to be on a panel and help answer an assigned question. As your pastor, I was particularly excited to answer the following: What is the role of communities in overcoming trauma and moral disorientation? It gave me great joy to talk about our church’s journey that led me to be in Ukraine here and now. Starting in 2022, our church gathered our community to pray for Ukraine following Russia’s invasion on February 24th. We asked for God to lead us as a church to know how to help. Those prayers began to be answered when we were able to aide a Ukrainian refugee who lived with members of FBCC with an offering and furnishings for her apartment. Then came Aleksey Yuditsenko. His testimony as a pastor and volunteer chaplain to soldiers moved our hearts. This was followed by a powerful moment when our church prayed for Pastor Aleksey and then gave generously to the pastor’s retreat that would aide pastors, who who like Aleksey, give of themselves to Christ at the risk of their own lives. Having been a participant of that retreat, I can tell you it did just that. Lastly, FBCC blessed my personal journey here with financial support, sincere prayer, and support for my family while gone. We are a church that has figured out a response on how to help Ukraine, even through we are an ocean away. I was so proud to share and the attendees of the conference were encouraged by your testimony.
Tomorrow our team disbands after a tremendous week together. I along with others, leave Ukraine in route to Poland. Some team members remain in country for further ministry. Please pray for us all as we go in separate directions. I thank God for each of them as I do you.
Sincerely,
Pastor David

Dear friends:
It is strange how much can change in a few hundred kilometers. From a suffering country in Ukraine to a peaceful city in Krakow, Poland I have felt stress literally leave my body. To begin, as soon as we crossed the border, rough roads marred by constant pot holes turned into a smooth surface that allowed you to lean back instead of sitting on edge. However, I didn’t realize how much I had relaxed until I woke up after having slept for eight straight hours. None of my nights on mission had that depth of rest to them. I was nervous and therefore kept one eye open should I hear sirens and need to dive into a bomb shelter. Last night though, I had no such worry. I was both grateful and guilty.
Hear me clearly. This isn’t my hero song. I was in Ukraine for one week only. Ukrainians have dealt with this stress for four years. They are the true heroes. To that end, I talked with our team members about the reality of this stress on the human soul. Aleksey said it best, “You learn to live differently.” I can only imagine. It reminded me how important it is to continue to pray for our Ukrainian brothers and sisters whether we are in a neighboring country or soon an ocean away. God makes the world big and small in the same moment. Its grandeur causes us to fall to our knees and say “Holy” yet the intimacy of Christ allows us to feel our brothers’ and sisters’ burdens as our own no matter where they are.
I travel home tomorrow. God willing I will see my family and sleep in my own bed. Though Ukraine will be very far from me, its people will be as a seal upon my heart.
See you soon,
Pastor David

So glad you are now with the ministers and their families. Praying for your time to be positive and inspiring to all in attendance!
The last day already?!? I’m sure you and your team have been the blessing you hoped to be. God doesn’t squander His opportunities, so surely you have been blessed as well. I’m looking forward to hearing all about it!
Praying you safely home,
Gil

Praying for all of the ministers and their families and all of the people of Ukraine. Also praying for you Pastor David and your safe travels home!
Praying daily for you and the team and a successful mission!
I have been praying for you David every day. I’m delighted by the successful trip you and your group have had. I know your presence was incredibly effective in showing the people you spent time with that their is a wider Christian community who suffers in their losses but praises them and God for their ministry and resilience in trial. I can’t wait to hear more about your experiences and growth. Godspeed on your return home.
Having you as a Christian ambassador from 1st Baptist Carrollton is a blessing to the Ukrainian people. Safe travel for all of you!
This we will pray for daily.
