Dear Church Family,

In recent weeks, I have made young adult ministry a focal point of sermons and church communications.  I have a strong passion for this important age demographic and believe First Baptist Church has a vital role to play in ministering to them as they seek to follow Jesus!  Historically, our church has had a strong young adult ministry but recently we have lost our way.  It’s time to reengage these amazing people in our community and reestablish our identity as a church with a thriving young adult ministry!

In that light, I along with other key leaders in our church will have two important listening sessions on Sunday, February 13th and Sunday, February 20th during the Sunday School hour.  The events will be hosted in the conference room located in The Place and will begin with breakfast fellowship at 9:45 followed by some time to listen to one another.  My prayer is that from these times of engagement, the hearts and minds of these young adults will speak towards the ways our church can best serve them and their families!

Here is how you can help in this initial phase.  One, please pray that God will move in a powerful way and will give clear understanding of the next steps the young adult ministry should take.  Two, please pray that God would raise up leaders that will help me in shepherding our young adults.  Three, if you know of young adults ages 23 – 36 who are a part of our church or are looking for a church home, please invite them to the upcoming events or simply encourage them to contact me!  Your support in these ways will mean so much, so I thank you in advance for your partnership.

Lastly, get ready for Sunday!  Our new beginnings continue with a sermon entitled “The Power You Live By” from 1 Corinthians 15:11-20.  Special guest Tanya Parks will participate in our children’s moment to highlight our missions emphasis this month.  Lastly, we will celebrate communion together. You don’t want to miss it and neither do your friends (trust me I know).  Invite them, won’t you?

Dr. David Hughes

Senior Pastor

Dr. David Hughes accepted the call to the senior pastor of First Baptist Church Carrollton in January 2022. David’s formation is in thanks to many fine schools, employers, churches, and his family. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish at Furman University (2005), a Master of Divinity from Erskine Theological Seminary (2018) and a Doctor of Ministry at McAfee School of Theology in Church Leadership and Administration (2023). Before accepting the call to ministry in 2011, David worked for six years for non-profits in Greenville, South Carolina and Patagonia, Chile. Previously, he served as the minister to students at First Baptist Church of Augusta (2018 – 2021) and Easley First Baptist Church (2011 – 2018). Married to Rebecca in 2006, David’s amazing wife is a constant source of love, encouragement, and partnership in the ministry. The two of them welcomed their daughter Maggie in 2012 and now watch with amazement as their precious daughter continues to grow and develop. David believes firmly that The Church is a place of invitation for all where lives can be transformed by The Gospel of Jesus Christ. His passion is to create vision and lead God’s people to express the love of Christ in the world.
